SUMMARY:CSAH's Tiny House Project Presentation
DESCRIPTION:SIBC has supported the Chatham Savannah Authority for the Homeless (CSAH) for several years. The CSAH’s Tiny House Project is the first of its kind in Georgia and the US. It provides homeless veterans with a place to eat\, sleep\, take care of themselves and a chance to return to normal life. \nJennifer Darcy\, Executive Director of CSAH has graciously agreed to take time out from her busy schedule to present to SIBC members an overview of the exciting work that CSAH is doing in our community to help the homeless\, above and beyond the Tiny House Project for veterans. \nThe presentation will be held on March 6th from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. Come learn more about the hope that the Tiny House Project gives to veterans and the other great work that CSAH is doing. Those SIBC members who have heard Jennifer speak before were really impressed at what CSAH is doing in our community. \nThe presentation will be held at the TLA Building in the TLA conference room on Skidaway Island. The TLA conference room is off to the right as you enter the TLA Building. \nWe request that you RSVP for the event so that we know how many people to expect. SUMMARY:Low Country Hook Ocean Race
DESCRIPTION:The Low Country Ocean Hook Race is one of the premier sailing events of the year. This exhilarating event starts in Hilton Head\, sailing past Tybee Island and then through Wassaw Sound\, finishing at the Landings Harbor Marina. SIBC will be hosting the Dockside Bar from ~1:30 pm until ~ 5:00 pm.  The Dockside Bar will cater to SIBC Members\, Race Sponsors and Race Participants.    \nCome out and watch the finish of the Hook Race from the best viewing location on Skidaway Island. Come and enjoy the views as the Sail Boats cross the finish line with colorful spinnakers straining in the wind and all sails rigged as the race crew fights for a winning position. \nHors d’oeuvre\, will be available as will Landings Lager\, Beer and Wine for a small $2.00 donation.

SUMMARY:USCG Air Station Tour at Hunter AAF
DESCRIPTION:Coast Guard Air Station (CGAS) Savannah supports a multitude of Coast Guard missions worldwide. Air Station Savannah provides Search & Rescue (SAR) coverage 24 hours a day\, 365 days a year\, for 450 miles of shoreline from the northern border of South Carolina to Melbourne\, Florida\, averaging more than 250 SAR cases a year. Other missions include: Marine Safety\, Marine Environmental Protection\, Fisheries Enforcement\, Aids to Navigation support\, Migrant Interdiction\, Drug Interdiction\, Other Law Enforcement and Defense Readiness. Many of these missions require deployment of aviation detachments aboard Coast Guard Cutters. \nOn April 17th SIBC members have a unique opportunity to tour USCG Air Station at Hunter Army Air Field. Our host is LT. Tucker Williams USCG. We will be meeting at 9:30 am at the Methodist Church parking lot and be transported by an Old Town Trolley to Hunter AAF. We will clear security and then tour the USCG Air Station with LT. Williams. Following our tour\, we will have lunch at a suitable location on the Landings. We should be done by early afternoon.

SUMMARY:Flotilla around Skidaway Island via Rhodes Creek
DESCRIPTION:This is SIBC’s first Flotilla of the 2024 Boating Season. The date of the Flotilla coincides with a 7.0 ft high tide at Romerly Marsh. We plan to take 3 or 4 boats from Delegal Marina at around 9:30 am\, transit Adams Creek where there is a high probability of seeing Dolphins. From Adams Creek\, you will be able to see homes on Skidaway Island. From Adams Creek\, we will turn into Rhodes Creek and wind our way among the hammocks with great views of Wassaw Island and Skidaway Island. Rhodes Creek flows into the Wilmington River where we will transit to Thunderbolt for lunch. On the way to Thunderbolt you will have great views of Wilmington Island. Following lunch\, we will boat down the Wilmington River to the Skidaway River\, past Isle of Hope\, down the Burnside River\, down the Vernon River ending our circumnavigation of Skidaway Island at the Delegal Marina. The complete trip should take us 4 to 5 hours. The trip will cost each member participating boat gas ($15/pp) and lunch at Tubby’s

SUMMARY:Flotilla Trip to Bluffton
DESCRIPTION:This flotilla is scheduled to leave from Landings Harbor Marina with 3 or 4 boats Wednesday\, May 15th at ~9:00 am and transit up the Wilmington River\, through the Elba cut\, across the Savannah River\, through Fields cut past Daufuskie Island\, through Calibogue Sound\, past Hilton Head\, up the May River to the Bluffton Public Dock. This trip will take approximately 2.5 hours one way. Bluffton is within walking distance of the Bluffton Public Docks. We plan on having lunch and wondering for a few hours around Bluffton before returning to the Landings Harbor Marina another 2.5 hour boat trip. \nBluffton is steeped in history yet bustling with new energy. Defined by the serpentine May River\, Bluffton offers a calming allure around every bend of the waterway. Bluffton’s coastal community located along the May River is rich with much to explore\, in any season. History\, culture\, and arts to uncover. Natural beauty\, waterways\, and parks to play in. Local markets to savor\, shops to browse\, and easy days spent strolling through galleries.  \nThe complete trip should take us all day returning to LHM by ~6:00 pm. The trip will cost each member participating boat gas ($22) and lunch at a Bluffton restaurant. We are limited to 23 members.

SUMMARY:UGA Aquarium Behind-the-Scenes Tour/Presentation
DESCRIPTION:For this event\, SIBC members will drive to the aquarium at 2:30 pm.  Anne Lindsay\, the Director of the UGA Marine Extension\, will give our group an introduction to the history of the aquarium (Georgia’s first) and outline the many ways it reaches out to entertain\, inspire\, and teach students of all ages\, including pre-K through college and adults. \nAfter Anne’s introduction\, our group will split in two smaller groups and each will rotate through two experiences. \n\nOne group will explore the aquarium and go “behind-the-scenes” to the area not open to the general public\, where Lisa\, the curator responsible for acquiring and caring for all the marine animals\, will explain all that is done to care for the animals. \nThe other group will go with another educator to see the labs where students examine phytoplankton\, dissect squid and fish\, learn about fish taxonomy\, and perform all other lab work.  We will also visit the touch tanks\, where SIBC members can pick up\, touch\, and learn about horseshoe crabs\, hermit crabs\, spider crabs\, whelks and mussels. \n\nAt 4:00 pm\, the aquarium closes and SIBC members will walk out on the bluff overlooking the Skidaway River\, where there is a covered pavilion with picnic benches and fans.  We’ll then enjoy a soiree with wine/beer and appetizers that we will bring. \nThe cost of this event is $7.00/pp.

SUMMARY:Kayak Trip on Ebenezer Creek (CANCELED)
DESCRIPTION:NOTE:  Unfortunately\, we’ve had to cancel this group trip due to the latest flooding from Tropical Storm Debby.  If interested in other kayak tours\, contact Savannah Canoe and Kayak at 912-341-9502.  They provide several half- and full-day tours in other areas. \nThis Kayak Trip takes place on Ebenezer Creek in Pooler. Ebenezer Creek is about 20 miles north of the city of Savannah.  It is a black water swamp\, lined with cypress and tupelo trees.  Ebenezer Creek is a slow moving creek that empties into the Savannah River\, alongside the historic Ebenezer Settlement.  You will be thrilled with the lush\, southern scenery and it is a great place to see alligators.\n\nWe will travel to Ebenezer Creek by individual car on Wednesday\, Sep 4th for a 3 hour kayak trip. The travel time to Ebenezer Creek is about 1 hour. Following the kayak trip we plan on having lunch if everyone is still dry!!   The cost for the adventure is $79/per person plus the cost of lunch. Savannah Canoe and Kayak will be providing the guides and kayaks. This will be an all-day trip.

This is a fun gathering not to be missed. SUMMARY:Gullah Tour of Daufuskie Island
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a memorable and educational Gullah tour on Daufuskie Island.  Experience the island through the eyes of Sallie Ann Robinson\, a sixth-generation Gullah born on Daufuskie who has dedicated herself to chronicling and sharing Gullah recipes\, dialect\, and folklore.  Her life and work as a chef\, author\, and tour master have been showcased in National Geographic\, Southern Living\, Bon Appetit\, Garden & Gun\, and The South Magazine\, among other publications.  She has also appeared on the Food Network\, the Travel Channel\, Georgia Public Broadcasting\, and WSAV’s The Bridge. \nFor this adventure\, we will meet at Landings Harbor at 8:30 AM to board a boat for travel directly to Daufuskie Island.  Upon arrival at Daufuskie\, we will be greeted by Sallie Ann and then get on her small air-conditioned passenger bus for an authentic and personalized three-hour Gullah tour (approximately 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM).  During the tour\, we will visit and learn about many historical Gullah landmarks as well as experience the natural beauty and peacefulness of Daufuskie.  Feel free to bring snacks since we won’t eat lunch until after the tour is over. \nFor lunch\, you have the option to eat at the Daufuskie Crab Company near the boat docks or bring your own lunch.  After lunch\, we will then board our boat and return back to Landings Harbor no later than 5:00 PM. \nDue to bus size\, there is 14-person limit for this trip.  If we have enough interest\, we will keep a wait list and schedule a second trip for those who could not get into this one. \nCost per person is $100 ($70 for the tour and $30 for boat fuel).  Lunch is an additional personal cost if you choose to eat at the restaurant.  THIS TRIP IS SOLD OUT! \nNOTE:  Money raised through the tour is used by the non-profit Daufuskie Island Gullah Heritage Society to help restore old Gullah homes and clean up and maintain Gullah cemeteries on Daufuskie Island.

DESCRIPTION:SIBC members will be cruising on a Pontoon Boat for a Sunset Dinner/Dolphin Cruise on Wednesday evening\, Oct 2nd\, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.  The route of the pontoon boat will be determined by our charter boat Captain based on the latest Dolphin sightings.  In the past we have left Landings Harbor Marina and gone south to the Wilmington River towards Wassaw Island’s North Beach and entered Romerly marsh or turned north and gone up the Wilmington River to Turner Creek.   \nDinner will be a box lunch catered from Jason’s Deli. A $45 per person fee for the pontoon boat and the catered dinner will be charged.  This event is BYOB.  \nThis event has been one of the highlights of SIBC’s boating season in past years and is not to be missed. There are only 36 available seats on the Pontoon Boat so mark your calendars.

SUMMARY:Tybee Island Marine Science Center & Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an island ecology experience at the Tybee Island Marine Science Center.  Our adventure includes a one-hour guided walk along Tybee’s north beach by a marine science educator who discusses topics such as the dynamics of Georgia’s barrier islands\, the intertidal zone\, forces behind tides and waves\, and sand dune formation. The second hour is spent at the Center for a presentation about the lives of the various sea turtles that nest on Georgia’s coastal beaches as well as a guided tour of the Center’s Coastal Galleries through live animal exhibits\, interactive stations\, life-size animal replicas\, and the Fossil Room. \nThis event is $15 per person and is limited to 20 participants. No cancellations. In the case of inclement weather\, the walk will be conducted with alternate indoor activities.  Please secure your ticket using the PayPal button at the bottom of this page. \nCity of Tybee parking fees are a separate expense ($4 per hour).  If you’d like to carpool\, please meet in the front parking lot of the Skidaway Island Methodist Church (54 Diamond Causeway) no later than 8:30 AM.  The drive is ~45 minutes to the Center. \nAfter the tour\, join us for lunch at the North Beach Bar & Grill located next to the Center. This is an additional personal cost and separate checks will be accommodated. \nNOTE:  If this event sells out and we have enough interest to fill another group\, we will schedule a second tour on another date.  Please email Hugh at hughandcharlene@gmail.com if you are unable to purchase a ticket for this date\, but are still interested if another tour is scheduled.   \nReminder – when paying\, replace the default SIBC email with your personal email.
